What does this number mean?

Every platform has a different character limit, and most cut the *display* long before the max: Instagram shows only the first 125 characters before "more". So the golden rule isn't "stay under the limit" — it's "put the hook and your main idea in the first line", before it gets truncated or the reader loses interest.
